ASTM F1554 is a standard specification for anchor bolts that are designed to be used in

structural applications. These bolts are typically used to secure steel structures to concrete or masonry foundations. The F1554 specification covers three grades of anchor bolts: Grade 36, Grade 55, and Grade 105.


Grade 36 anchor bolts are made from low carbon steel and are c

ommonly used in light-duty applications such as residential construction. Grade 55 anchor bolts are made from medium carbon steel and are used in more demanding applications such as commercial or industrial construction. Grade 105 anchor bolts are made from heat-treated medium carbon alloy steel and are used in the most demanding applications such as high-rise buildings or bridges.


ASTM F1554 grade 55 anchor bolts are manufactured from a modified mild steel that has a higher minimum yield strength (55 ksi) than traditional A36 mild steel (36 ksi). This specification was widely used in the light pole and traffic signal industry long before the ASTM F1554 specification was introduced in 1994 and was commonly referred to as A36M55. Just as with grade 36, grade 55 covers anchor bolts in diameters ranging from 1/2″

through 4″.
